A study into video game playing in America has come back with results that are surprising; according to a recent study the average age of an adult video game player is 35. This is much higher in age than was previously thought.
A team from Centers for Disease and Prevention also found out that gamers were less healthy, overweight and unhappier than non-gamers. Researchers within the government agency looked at data from 500 adults that were between the ages of 19-90 and lived in the Seattle-Tacoma area. More than 45 percent of the surveyed played video games.
The area Seattle-Tacoma was chosen because it has the highest internet usage within the US and also has a large market for media.
A similar study was conducted within the UK in 2002 and those results found that the average gamer was aged between 25 and 34. But the recent finding in America suggests that the keenest player’s age is slowing getting higher.
Further findings examined the perception of game player’s mood, personality, health status, physical and mental health and body mass. It found greater depression and body mass in players over none players. Dr James B weaver said he was not surprised by the findings.
‘Health risk factors, specifically a higher BMI and a larger number of poor mental-health days, differentiated adult video game players from none-gamers.’
