Unbridled Success for GT5

Anyone who thought that Polyphony Digital’s latest offering, the prologue to the full game of Gran Turismo 5 would be held in contempt by gamers as being purely a glorified demo will be retracting their comments forthwith. A week after its release it has become the fastest selling PS3 game ever. The title can be considered a budget game as it is somewhat cheaper than your average PS3 title but as it is in no way a full game and only has a handful of tracks, the sales rate is still astonishing.

The title has beaten the record of Resistance: Fall of Man that originally held the accolade during the first days of the console’s launch. GT5 not only topped the charts of PS3 games this week, but of every game across all of the consoles; a truly remarkable feat for a demo. Strangely however, the game has sold better in Europe than in Japan; the sales figures in Europe surpassing the Japanese three month figures in a rather rapid two days.

Clearly the Gran Turismo series is still immensely popular with gamers despite constant delays in production and the abandoning of the Gran Turismo Mobile promises for the PSP system. Developers at Polyphony Digital will most certainly be buoyed by what is vindication of their time consuming efforts to produce a sublimely high quality game. As gamers wait with baited breath for GT5, the profits and feed back from the prologue will be invaluable in the development of what could be the best driving experience in the history of the video games industry.
