A recent survey has highlighted the amount of time people spend on line throughout the world. More than 27,000 internet users, aged between 18 and 55, in 16 countries were surveyed by global market information group TNS.

They were asked to answer questions relating to their web habits and their attitudes and opinions to both traditional and online media. The information was also broken down into different sections of society to gain an accurate view of worldwide internet usage.

The findings show that the Chinese spend the largest amount of their leisure time online but also threw up an interesting statistic; UK housewives spend more time online than the Chinese average of 47% and as a demographic group they spend more time online than both students and the unemployed.

The UK came in 9th in the study behind China, Japan and the US but ahead of most other European countries. The Danes spend the least amount of their leisure time online at just 15% but the younger the user it seems the more time was spent online. On average under 25s spend 36% of their leisure time online, this rises to an incredible 50% amongst the Chinese.

Another interesting finding was that, on average, internet users had 17 online friends although in a surprising turnaround the Chinese, the biggest web users, were less likely to actually meet any of these friends in person while the Germans topped that poll with 76% saying they had arranged to meet people they had first encountered on the net. Other European countries also came out well in this part of the survey with the UK registering just below the average at 58%.

The UK came bottom in another part of the survey; it’s the least trusting of traditional printed media. Only 23% of people in the UK trusted the news they read in the newspapers, almost the same number of people who trusted information supplied on Wikipedia.
