The Game Developers Conference is throwing up surprises and exciting new interface methods for future gaming. As stated in a previous post, measuring brainwaves will become an increasingly popular method of controlling characters and actions in video games. This revolutionary technology is set to change the video games market until it is unrecognisable to contemporary gamers; the hand-held controllers we use today are surely about to become a thing of the past.

The system basically picks up electro-neural activities in the brain and wirelessly sends this information to the computer. Users will be able to manipulate their gaming environment intuitively and naturally. The challenge for developers is to work out which signals should be converted to digital information and how this information will affect controls.

The headset technology that picks up neurological signals is not new but introducing it to the gaming sphere is a revolutionary step. The headset being promoted at the conference is the first to negate the need for large networks of electrodes, specialist technicians and gel to assist the reading of brainwave activity.

The technology will be especially useful for creating realistic facial expressions for gamers as it can detect smiles and grimaces in real time. The headset is also able to pick up on gamer emotions that in theory should make AI characters far more responsive and believable. So far the headset picks up on over thirty expressions and emotions including frustration and excitement. The technology is also supposedly able to measure cognitive actions such as pushing and pulling objects in a virtual world.

The technology with enough development will expand from the gaming industry and be used in the creation of a 3D internet. The applications for virtual communication are truly revolutionary and pose exciting prospects for software developers. What can definitely be asserted is that the future is really here, the science fiction of the past is soon to become reality.
