It seems the battle to dominate the Smartphone market is set to get interesting in the coming months as more and more companies unveil plans for devices that are packed to bursting with features and applications.
The latest big name to unveil an all singing, all dancing mobile device is Nokia. At an event in Barcelona it previewed its new N-97 which it hopes will tick all the boxes and offer customers a real alternative to Apple’s iPhone. Although the new Smartphone will not be available until some time in 2009 it is already being talked about favourably.
The demand for devices that offer multiple functions has grown steadily in recent years, largely thank to the popularity of the iPhone, and companies like Blackberry and Samsung have been eager to meet those demands. The N-97 is clearly positioning itself as an alternative to all those makes as it comes with all the features you’d expect from a mobile plus some that that are familiar to both iPhone and Blackberry users.
It has a touch screen, a real keyboard, Wi-Fi internet access and a host of new features including widgets which will enable the user to customise their phones with news feeds, weather updates, games and social-networking applications such as Facebook. It’ll also come with an updated version of Nokia Maps which will synch with Nokia’s Ovi Web portal and make the transfer of data between Smartphone and computer quick and easy.
Nokia hopes that because the N-97 has so many features it will enable them to weather the economic storm that is predicted next year. In the past it has been criticised for being slow to respond to the market, but as consumers look for more bang for their bucks it could be that they have come up with a real winner.
