For next year’s perfect Christmas present, get your name down for the latest technological advancement from Nokia.
New software applications are being developed for translation purposes with numerous uses. Chinese restaurants in the UK often equip their menus with English translations but not always. In China the chances of this are even less likely. So, if you don’t want to get your seaweed mixed up with your steak or your lychees confused with shark fin soup, try this.
With your new Nokia smart phone, just take a picture of the symbols and they will instantly be translated into English. Currently with 9,000 Chinese words and 600 Japanese words recognised, Nokia hope to enable it to also recognise Korean, French, Italian and Polish before it goes on sale next year, with other languages to follow.
Menu recognition is the least of this new gadget’s abilities. It will be able to translate things such as road signs and warning signs too.
The application is expected to be added to top Nokia models such as the N95 camera phone. This already comes with its own satellite navigation system, music player and internet browser.
Also from Nokia comes every woman’s dream. A new development in shopping tools. Take a photo of a shop window display when you see anything you like from holiday offers, to clothing or furniture and direct it to your internet browser. The phone then uses image recognition software to find the same object on the internet.
Within seconds, you will be directed to the shops internet store where you can shop online. So, a quick stroll through the high street on your lunch break taking photos and then home in comfort to sit and shop without the queues.
