As queues of people develop outside the major phone stores throughout the UK, the excitement and the concern over the iPhone 4′s capabilities grow. And to help stoke the fires, a recent Fururama episode pokes fun at those eager to get their hands on the new Apple device, taking a side swipe at twitter along the way.

In the latest entry, Fry and company are queuing up like automatons in order to get a new eyePhone – a piece of technology that compels people to use ‘Twitcher’. In turn this software is infects users with a Twit Worm – turning them into zombies.

One of the key pokes at Apple centres around Fry’s purchase of the eyePhone. The shop assistant, when asked if there are any eyePhones left, replies “There may be one,” and reaches behind a curtain where thousands are being stockpiled. Handing him the device, the assistant advises: “OK, it’s $500. You have no choice of carrier. The battery can’t hold a charge, and the reception isn’t very..” Fry interrupts him, screaming: “Shut up and take my money!”

Internet Marketing

When it comes to the iPhone (and the eyePhone) it seems that traditional forms of advertising are not required. While the iPhone is becoming a very important way of using the internet, the internet plays only a small role in marketing the device. Word of mouth seems to be the most powerful marketing technique – that, along with the deep desire to have the very latest and most costly piece of mobile technology.
