Google Has Your Number

It’s been a busy period for businesses over the Christmas and New Year period. The recession clearly hadn’t hit public spending as much as everyone initially thought, with many companies reporting acceptable to good Christmas sales. The first decade of the noughties has come to a close and it’s amazing to think how far the internet, and especially Pay Per Click advertising, has come.

However, it hasn’t taken long for Google to launch a new piece of innovation for their PPC service. Barely two weeks into the new decade and already Google are promising to further enhance their sponsored link service for  next generation mobile phones.

The enhancement will allow advertisers to place their phone numbers alongside their sponsored link, with Google promising to make it as easy to ‘click-to-call’ your business as it is to click to visit your website.

There are a number of factors that will affect what phone numbers a user is shown, obviously you don’t want to keep accidently calling Japan or America as your phone bill will be massive. Basically using the phones geographic location as a starting point, Google will work out the phone number and closest business address for companies and then will display this as a fifth line of text in the ad. At launch this new technology will be running on most of the new phones like the iPhone, Android and Palm WebOS.

One aspect that current PPC campaigners might be concerned about is the cost they are likely to incur from the new technology. Well I am happy to report that when a customer clicks to call the company it will only cost the business the same amount as it does if someone clicks their link through a web browser.

So there you have it, a New Year, a new start and already Google are bringing out new technologies to make our lives searching for products and services on the internet even easier.
