facebookfrienfeedFacebook has set the competition recently with Google, purchasing the content-sharing service known as FriendFeed. Industry watchers have said they expected Google or Twitter to purchase the company, which is being currently praised for its ‘real-time’ search engine.
This type of search is useful because it allows you to find out what is happening as it happens on any subject. Robert Scoble, a well known blogger has said, ‘Watch out Google, Facebook knows the real money is in real-time search.’ He went on to say the BBC, ‘Google is the king of regular search, FriendFeed is the king of real-time search. This makes the coming battle over this even more interesting.’
Back in May this year, Google founder Larry Page had admitted that Google had fallen behind over services such as Twitter, which now has around 45 million users worldwide. Google has pointed out that people want to use search engines in real time and Twitter has catered to this, where as Google is on more of a per-second basis.
Within Silicon Valley it is agreed that this purchase will change the game, Ben Parr associate editor of Mashable said ‘FriendFeed is well known for having some powerful and intelligent technology that allows users to aggregate everything they do online and do it in real time. With this acquisition, Facebook is gunning directly not only at Twitter, but at Google. This is a warning shot to those two companies.’
