In the highly competitive world of search engines, the big search portals will do almost anything to gain new users. But getting someone to switch over to another search engine is not easy; people get used to the provocative headlines on Yahoo! or they like the daily treat of an inspiring landscape on Bing. But more often than not, it’s very hard to get them to leave the attractive simplicity of Google. And Bing and Yahoo’s decision to prompt iPhone 4 users to switch to them whilst using their search engine is another example of the ever changing tactics aimed at winning new users.

Internet Marketing

Any company that sells anything has to think of new ways to get people to leave their competitors and use them instead. Bing and Yahoo are in quite a good position as regards this on the new iPhone: if you use either of these engines you will get a prompt asking you if you want to switch to that engine as a default. In terms of internet marketing for search engines this is potentially a very effective way to get new users.

Busy people are lazy people, and if changing to a new engine is as easy as clicking ‘OK’, then people are much more likely to do it. In the world of the internet, customers can switch allegiances more easily than ever before – this is true of many different products and services. It means firms will have to work harder to keep their existing customers. People don’t switch bank accounts or mobile phones networks because it’s simply too much hassle; the way things are going though, almost all businesses will be subject to the risk of high customer/client turnover – and they’ll have to work harder to keep us all happy.
