According to ComScore, Youtube is still in total command of video watching on the internet. May saw an all-time-high of 14.6 billion views – that’s like everyone on the planet watching 2.1 Youtube videos per person. When it comes to upoading and watching the moving image, YouTube still dominates.

But much like Facebook and Twitter, YouTube has always posed the question: How do you make it profitable? It seems that this question has been answered by placing advertising and promotions in every available corner of the site; pop ups over videos, promoted material from TV channels with ads, standard banners – it seems Google have monetised it just enough not to annoy its many, many users.

But how do companies learn to use Youtube to their advantage? When you see the figures of 14 billion views, you know there must be a similarly huge number of videos to watch. Getting to the top of the pile for any subject or term is not easy. The old school of thought is to optimise your videos to the hilt and to use provocative titles etc. – but this is really only half the battle (if that).

The reality is you need to create great videos. The most popular videos are the ones that are informative, entertaining – or more often than not – funny. Marketing on Youtube is like marketing on Facebook or Twitter – you have to create something real first. Create a following of people who really want to see your next video, and you’ll have customers who are more ready to discover what you have for sale.
