Call of Duty 4 is rapidly becoming the online first person shooter of choice for gamers. It is estimated that purely on the Xbox Live network the game is attracting around 1.25 million users daily. It is also proving to be hugely popular on the PS3 network says the game’s developer Infinity Ward.

These figures have been regularly achieved throughout a two to three month period. A spokesperson for Infinity Ward was extremely pleased with these developments at the launch of new downloadable maps for the game last week. If the tallies for the consoles and PC numbers are combined, Call of Duty 4 may well be considered the most popular online game ever; at least in terms of unique users in any twenty four hour period.

These figures have been released at a time when Call of Duty 4 seems to have edged a lead over its main FPS rival, Halo 3. This ongoing battle started at Call of Duty 4’s release and is still a close affair. While Call of Duty 4 boasts daily figures of 1.25 million users; Bungie, the developer of Halo 3 are not too far behind with nearly a million users a day.

While sales figures have not been released it is still estimated that Call of Duty 4 has brought many gamers to their first online gaming experiences. What is certain is that as games become more advanced and the popularity of online gaming grows, a title will come along soon to overtake Call of Duty’s top spot. In such a rapidly paced industry, the pinnacle is never guaranteed for long, there is always a game around the corner, waiting in the wings to take the title of most popular online game.
