With 60% of the world’s population, housing 400 million internet users, Asia is a goldmine of potential. With the .asia domain suffix now up for grabs, over 30,000 applications for domain names have been received so far with companies being advised to get on board quickly.
Companies have been able to reserve domains to match their trademark since October last year during the ‘sunrise’ period and this has now opened up to allow anyone to purchase .asia domain names. The first .asia domains are expected to go live on the internet next month.
The DotAsia Organisation behind the new suffix aim to reduce the chances of conflicting domain claims that the .eu domain experienced by auctioning off .asia domains to the highest bidder in the event of a dispute. It is also a requirement that the company already be registered in the Asia/Pacific region.
The sale of domain names, particularly once interest has taken off, can see prices rise to more than £1 million through legitimate sales, and other. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) says there could be thousands of new suffixes to bid for by the end of the year.
