It sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, but Light Blue Optics has recently received funding to develop holographic laser projection technology. This futuristic sounding technology is touch-enabled and means that any surface that is flat, such as a table can be transformed into a touch-sensitive display. What this does is remove the need for a touch screen and allows users to directly interact with multimedia content.
Other companies including LBO have been promising mini-projectors that can be incorporated into mobile devices for quite some time now. We have been offered a few different devices but none have boasted the technology that LBO is boasting. They claim that the holographic laser technology will deliver vibrant colours and have focus free operation, whilst remaining in the class 1 laser safety classification.
So LBO have managed to impress investors with their proposed technology, netting the project an impressive 15 million dollars. This money will accelerate the development of this technology with interest in the markets automotive, industrial and consumer electronics. But just to clarify, the term ‘holographic’ refers not to the projected image but to the actual method of the projection. Mini hologram projectors are still something of science fiction for now.
