With the majority of computer users only just getting used to the Windows Vista operating system, Bill Gates has dropped the bombshell that Windows 7 could literally be just around the corner. During a question and answer session of the Inter-American Development Bank hints were dropped that the new operating system could be as little as a year away. Officially the date for the new system is 2010, only three years after the release of Vista. Industry commentators however think that these dates are wholly optimistic and Windows 7 is probably further away than Microsoft predictions.
Mr Gates referred to a twelve month waiting period for the new software at the Q&A session. He was recorded as saying that he was ‘super-enthused’ about the functions that are being developed. The Microsoft supremo however refused to be tied down over exactly what windows 7 would bring to the party; which features will be employed remains a mystery.
Just a year after the consumer release of Vista it is believed that the test version of Windows 7 labelled ‘Milestone 1’ is already with some of the software company’s larger customers. A hastily put together statement after the Q&A session by Microsoft stated that Mr Gates was referring to the test system rather than the finished product. In reality it will probably be at least two years until ‘Milestone’ hits the shelves.
Customers will be relieved as many have only just updated to Vista, especially considering that the problems with the operating system have only recently been fixed with Service Pack 1. Whether the new system will have the same teething problems as its predecessor remains to be seen. But with the cost of new software, most consumers will be happy to wait for a few more years until they have update once again.
